Investigation

Failure to conceive can be related to factors in both the woman and the man. In some cases it’s not possible to find the exact cause, but thorough investigation is important to find the most successful treatment for you and get the optimal results (if you’ve been referred by your family doctor, the investigation is free of charge).

Investigation programme for the woman

  • Cervical swab for chlamydia
  • Cervical smear
  • Ultrasound assessment of the uterus and fallopian tubes using a contrast substance
  • Blood sample for hormonal analysis
  • Blood test for hepatitis and HIV infection (see Fertility).

Investigation programme for the man

  • Semen analysis. If the sperm count is substantially reduced, further examinations may be needed.
