Freezing of semen

Semen can be frozen if the man needs medical treatment that may affect his sperm.  In some cases, it is also possible to freeze semen if the man, for some reason, is unable to deliver a sperm sample on the day of the insemination.
Defrosted semen has a lower quality than fresh semen. Some 1/3 of the sperm cells perish during freezing and defrosting. That’s why we need a proper assessment of the quality of the semen before deciding whether to freeze it.
