Insemination IUI
If your fallopian tubes are not blocked (see HSU), and if the sperm quality is acceptable (more than 2 mil/ml), it makes sense to try 3-6 inseminations. Insemination is free of charge if you’ve been referred by your family doctor.
The treatment
Insemination involves injecting sperm into the uterus through a thin catheter at the time of ovulation. You’ll have an ultrasound scan to find the exact time of ovulation.
Treatment without stimulation
This treatment only involves using ultrasound scans to monitor the one follicle that matures in your monthly cycle. Once the follicle has a diameter of 18 mm, an ovulation-triggering injection is given, and insemination takes place 1-2 days later. We often inseminate 2 days in a row.
Treatment with stimulation
The ovaries are often stimulated to mature more than one egg with hormones. The treatment is usually a combination of tablets and injections.
You’ll take the tablets (Pergotime) from day 3 to day 7 of your cycle (the first day of menstruation is day 1). The injections are given on days 8, 9 and 10. And on day 10 or 11 you come to the clinic for a scan.
The doses of drugs needed vary, and the treatment is therefore tailored to match your specific requirements.
With this treatment, it's particularly important to monitor the follicles with ultrasound. In some cases more than 3 follicles mature, and then insemination will have to be cancelled, because of the increased risk of a pregnancy with twins or triplets.
Once the follicle has a diameter of 18 mm, you’ll be given an ovulation-triggering injection, and insemination takes place 1-2 days later. We often inseminate 2 days in a row.
Partner’s sperm
On the day of the insemination, the man must supply a sperm sample before 8.00 in the morning. The sperm will be washed (gradient centrifugation), and the most active sperm cells will be used for insemination, which will take place later the same day; the exact time of insemination will be scheduled to suit you.
Donor sperm
We buy donor sperm from the sperm bank Cryos or from Nordic Cryo Bank.
2-3 weeks later
If you haven’t had your period about 2 weeks after the insemination, you should take a pregnancy test at home. Please phone the clinic to tell us about the result. If the test is positive, we’ll schedule your first scan about 3 weeks later (see Pregnancy scans)
