IUS (Intra Uterine System)

If you suffer from very heavy menstrual bleeding, a hormone coil or IUS (Mirena) may be a good solution for you (see however Bleeding disturbances). In contrast to the Pill, the IUS doesn’t contain oestrogen, only gestagen. An IUS reduces the amount of bleeding as the continuous release of gestagen prevents the lining of the uterus from growing. For the first couple of months after you’ve had the IUS fitted, your period will be irregular and there will be spot bleeding. But in most cases, these problems are only temporary, and most women find the IUS works well. Some will experience that their period stops altogether.
If you’ve been referred by your family doctor, the treatment is free of charge. However, you still have to pay for the IUS, which costs about DKK 1,300. But if the main reason for having it fitted is heavy periods, you can have a subsidy of about DKK 400 from the Danish Medicines Agency. And the private health insurance ”Danmark” reimburses part of the costs as well. We’ll see to the application for subsidies for you.

Some women experience temporary side-effects in the form of headaches, mood swings, acne or tender breasts.
